Hell Cat: The Demon Slayer Game

Through CalArts Coursera certificate program I was taught how to incorporate key concepts in game design to create my own simple paper-based game. Using two 6-sided dice, design, character concepting and dialogue I created a game about fighting through the perils of hell.

Base Game

My game started with a simple concept- fight through hell to be reunited with your dead cat. You roll a die to move, and upon coming up to a battle spaced marked on the board you'd roll a die for the demon you're fighting then again for yourself, hoping to get the higher number to move forward.

Adding Rules and Context

At this point I learned to the refine rules, and spaces to easily communicate the game to the player. I made the game play a little more digestible by adding rules to the bottom of the page. I added the concept of the potion shop demon, which is a special space, upon landing on you get a +2 to your next dice roll in battle.

Developing the Story

At this point I've added in the idea of the story- you've woken up in hell and want to find your cat who had died, knowing he'd be there. You being your journey through hell to find him, battling anyone who tries to get in your way. I also refined the game by cleaning up the rules.

Character development and Final Project

In my final version of the project, I've created more difficulty by adding new rules for each demon you fight, and higher difficulty on the final demon. I also gave each character, and you, the main character, more personality to create a more in depth experience in the game.
